Good: BYE!
Rollercoaster ride, nail biter, horse race, whatever you call it, this was and is a ride.
No guts, no glory! John McGuire pulls off rare defeat of an incumbent in a District that fires slacker Congressman. About 100 supporters gathered at the Virginian Hotel in Lynchburg to wait for the results. The crowd is tense here and from watchers at the Good event reports say its much the same there.
Bob Good wasn’t quite ’good’ enough and loses the count on a small margin that is guaranteed to bring an automatic recount as the spread is less than a point.
Bob Good ran on distortions of his opponent’s positions and record to cover for his own lack of legislative success. He claimed at the Trump event this past week that he was leading by 25 points but that hot air disapated this evening. Good should have a much better advantage as an incumbent but his negative ad strategy may have backfired. The negative stuff certainly works for the political class of zombies looking for bias affirmation, but plain folk plain hate it. If success and ability were actually a metric for much of Good’s supporters, this would have been a blow out for McGuire who is a successful legislator on the State level, getting bills signed into law in the House and several in his first Senate session as well. Good has never gotten a bill signed into law.
Did Trump’s endorsement help? Quite likely but not as much as many had hoped. At any rate this ain’t over. More to come as this develops.
About a 100 people, most not in this picture as many are milling around in the lobby waiting for news.
The County numbers are interesting; many of Bob Good’s handpicked Committees railed against McGuire such as Jack Dyer of Hanover and Jim Herring of Goochland who is Mark Herring’s nephew, and passed around anti-McGuire resolutions. The numbers demonstrate how out of touch these Committees are with the rank and file. More to come on this as the dust settles.
In Hanover County Good received 37% of the vote but took Hanover Courthouse by storm with 100% of the vote (2 votes).
Word came in while writing this post from the Virginian Hotel here in Lynchburg that’s Bob good left his own party minutes before McGuire announced his win by the back door.
